A brief incounter sometime
leaves an indelible mark in your life that remains and inspires you to be a better person. Back when the hurricane hit the
gulf coast i had the oppurtunity to give a brief helping hand to the victims. An experiance i will never forget, but one instance
stands out amoung all the devastation. While spending all day making and passing out sandwiches, soup, water and what ever
else we could get our hands on there sat a small boy on a rock some 50 feet from where we had been set up all day. The boy
sat there on this rock all evening gazing up at the sky and watching all the confusion moving around him. When the lines finally
were gone and we were cleaning up and preparing to return back to our homes up north this small boy got up and walked up to
the tables and we noticed he was barefoot and his clothes were ripped, tattered, covered in mud, dirt and ect. When he walked
up he stood there stared up at us with these big brown eyes. After about a minute he looked down at the ground then back up
and asked for a sammich. The boy had sat there all that time hungry and lost. The place went dead silent because the sandwiches
and everything else were all gone. The soup pot was scrapped clean and there was enough for a small cold cup full of soup.
A couple pieces of bread were found and a bottle of water was brought over. The child took this and thanked us and returned
to his rock. We found out later that he was 7 years old and looking for his mom and dad. That small cup of soup was all the
food he had eaten since the night before. I still see that face and those hungry eyes daily and wonder if his family was ok
and that he was safe. Those eyes will be with me the rest of my life and whatever i can do in this world to make sure no other
child has Those Hungry Little Eyes, I will be there.
